2D/3D Map

A 2D orthophoto map and a 3D orthophoto map serve different purposes, but they both start with the concept of an orthophoto. An orthophoto is an aerial photograph geometrically corrected ("orthorectified") to eliminate distortion caused by camera tilt and terrain relief. This correction results in an image where the scale is

2D Orthophoto Map :

A 2D orthophoto map is essentially a flat, two-dimensional representation of the Earth's surface, like a traditional map. It's created by orthorectifying aerial photographs or satellite imagery, removing any perspective or relief distortions. These maps are commonly used for planning, visualization, and analysis purposes in various fields such as urban planning, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure development. They provide a bird's eye view of the area, with features represented in their true horizontal positions.

3D Orthophoto Map :

A 3D orthophoto map, on the other hand, incorporates elevation data to represent the Earth's surface in three dimensions. This is often achieved by combining orthophotos with digital elevation models (DEMs) or LiDAR data. By integrating elevation information, these maps provide a more comprehensive view of the terrain, allowing for accurate visualization of surface features in three dimensions. They are particularly useful in applications such as terrain modelling, flood risk assessment, line-of-sight analysis, and 3D visualization.
